Week 5: Grateful

I am grateful for Ms. Horton because she helped me make the internship possible, my supervisors at Cake Art Supplies (Katie & Maria), Professor Duran & Mr. Morales for the educational classes, my family, friends, and life it's self. The experiences I am grateful for this summer are the internship at Cake Art Supplies, the classes at the Summer Career Academy, and getting accepted to 10,000 Degrees. I am lucky to have had to learn about financial planning because it made me realize that being an adult isn't easy and money can be wasted in such a short period of time. I am lucky to have had the opportunity to intern at Cake Art Supplies because it showed me how it would be if I had a job and that you can get very creative when decorating. Also, I loved working with the kids and eating some of the edible creations!

Prompt #5

One thing that I am grateful for from class this summer is waybook. I am very grateful for all the things it had to offer me. I really enjoyed the surveys it had me take on my personality and strengths, and I feel that i learned a few new things about myself from it. I also appreciated the discoveries as a way to write down what I was trying to process in my head, making things much easier. Often times things got jumbled in my head and the discoveries helped me to express this feeling and make it less confusing. Lastly I was grateful to be able to set my short and long term goals in my waybook. It's nice to have everything that I hope to accomplish and how to get there all in the same place.

I am grateful that I was given the opportunity this summer to work with kids. Working with children is something I really enjoy and I appreciate the fact that I was able to do this for fun. I am grateful for every single one of the kids in my camp for each one has taught me at least one valuable lesson. I also thank my supervisor for allowing me to work with these kids and have a great summer.

Grateful

This summer has been going great so far. The internship sure did make it fun and useful. I have learned many things from my internship, class, and myself. I am very grateful first of all for the opportunity of having an internship and these classes over the summer. I really appreciated the budget lesson, and the discovery lessons. The discovery lessons made me realize much more about myself that I didn't know about. The class overall was packed with great lessons and assignments. My internship was also great! I appreciated working alongside babies and the staff. Everyone was very sweet and patient with me. The babies rarely threw a fit. It was just sp amazing working with everyone. I am just really glad I got this opportunity.

This makes me think that if I maintain a similar savings pattern, I will have a substantial amount of money saved up in my future.

Grateful

I'm so grateful for being able to be apart of an internship this summer, also being apart of this class for my internship.  I learned so much, like how to be professional basically for everything.  Being in this internship also made me realize who I really wanted to be, I was so scared that I was never going to find out how I wanted to live m life and now I do.

Week #5: Grateful For

I am grateful that I live in such a prosperous community and that I get to benefit from the wonderful College and Career Center Program and get an internship. I am thankful for my liaison, Greg Davison, who got me my internship at PaperSeed Foundation with Aliyya Shelley Mattos. I have learned that I can be lazy when it comes to continuously checking my email and phone. I learned a lot about how to be professional in a workplace environment. I enjoyed learning about social media and marketing and I feel I would have been much less confident if I hadn't had the class. Professor Duran and Morales were wonderful teachers and I enjoyed all of their feedback they gave. I know that if I hadn't thought of the future and planned anything out, even if it was a plan that was unlikely for me to actually do, I would never have done it. I would never have thought of property taxes, or how buying soap and toilet paper would all add up.
I liked taking the quizzes because I got some unexpected results. Once I got a 33, and it told me that anything above a 32 meant you were autistic or had Asperger's, which I don't think I have. I already knew how to used google drive, but google sites and blogger were both completely new. I liked how people would read and comment on my blog posts and I would do the same with them. I learned what skills I lack, and what my strong suits are from analyzing the Career Readiness Skills. This class was helpful in making me thing of the future and other concepts I have ignored up until now. My internship taught me about professionalism and how to communicate effectively. I was given opportunities that are not available to most people. I am lucky and very thankful for the wonderful summer I have had working and going to class.

blog #4

The total of my future expenses each year are $75,000.  I know this is logical because my primary sources for information are salary.com. According to healthcare salaries.com I can likely count on making $175,000 each year in my future job as a Pediatrician.  My education/training to get that job will cost $250,000 total for all years of training. I want to save $30,000 for my rainy day fund each year, and $25,000 for retirement each year.  If I save $25,000 for retirement each year, by the time I am 65 years old I will have $925,000 plus interest. Comparing my future income and expenses makes me think of how great of a decision i am making!

Future Expenses

  • The total of my future expenses each year are $61,443.11.  I know this is logical because my primary sources for information are The New America Foundation, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America.
  • According to U.S. News I can likely count on making $80,000 each year in my future job as a Mechanical Engineer.  My education/training to get that job will cost $____ total for all years of training.
  • I want to save $2,000 for my rainy day fund each year, and $12,000 for retirement each year.  If I save $12,000 for retirement each year, by the time I am 65 years old I will have $480,000 plus interest.
  • Comparing my future income and expenses makes me think….
That I may end up being better off than I thought I would be. I think that having $4,000 extra dollars a year after expenses and savings is a good amount of money to maybe invest in something or spend it on things for myself. Also this is promising because I believe that $80,000 won't be the peak of my salary, I believe that I will be able to work my way up higher than that thus earning more money. I wasn't too surprised about the costs of anything and the websites that I found were very helpful with that. Overall I believe that if I can stick to this plan I will be in pretty good shape.

Week 4

  • The Total of my future expenses each year are $56,265. I know this is logical because my primary sources for information are http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/(undisclosed-Address)-San-Rafael-CA-94903/2109660191_zpid/
  • According to http://work.chron.com/much-cake-baker-make-per-year-14449.html  I can likely count on making $23,250 each year in my future job as a baker. My education/training to get that job will cost $14,977 total for all years of training.
  • I want to save $4,000 for my rainy day fund each year, and $5,000 for retirement each year. If I save 5,000 for retirement each year, by the time I am 65 years old I will have $170,000 plus interest.
Comparing my future income and expenses makes me think It isn't easy being an adult and I need to start making a financial plan soon.

Over the course of the summer, there are numerous things that I am grateful for, including the opportunity to complete a summer internship. I am also grateful to be receiving my work readiness certificate soon, and to have gained a great deal of experience for my future. I learned that working with kids as a career is very demanding and requires you to be patient, caring, and dedicated. throughout my internship, I also learned that maybe working with kids is not the best choice for me. From the summer career academy, I learned how to plan most parts of my future, and how to put work readiness skills to use in my everyday life.

    Blog #4 -- Expenses

    Blog #4 My Future- Expenses

-The total of my future expenses each year are $69,608.  I know this is logical because my primary sources for information are collegecalc.org, zillow.com, University of Virginia school of Medicine, physicianjobboard.com, and salary.com.

    - For this exercise, I assumed to be a Radiologist working and living in San Francisco.

    - According to salary.com, I can likely count on making about $378,393 each year in my future job as a radiologist. My education/training to get that job will cost about $350,040 total for all years of training, including a 4-year university and med school.

    - I want to save about $5,000 for my rainy day fund each year, and $6,000 for retirement each year.  If I save $6,000 for retirement each year, by the time I am 65 years old I will have $210,000 plus interest.

    - Comparing my future income and expenses makes me think…. that maybe I am putting too much money into everyday expenses, and that I will be spending more than necessary each year if I intend to follow this plan.

    Week 4

    Displaying photo 1.JPG
You may use this template (copy and paste it, then fill in the blanks) to write your blog:

**I cut my income in half for taxes before I subtracted my future expenses.
    • The total of my future expenses each year are $33,487.56.  I know this is logical because my primary sources for information are www.apartmentlist.com (to find phantom apartment), www.energy-louisiana,com (to find fuel, energy), www.aie.org (to find college loan payment), www.circleofblue.org (to find water prices), www.humana.org (cost of health insurance), www.ehealthinsurance.org (dental), www.latax.state.la.us (property tax).
    • According to http://www1.salary.com/College-Professor-Salary.html I can likely count on making $83,802 each year in my future job as a Professor of Archaeology.  My education/training to get that job will cost $159,072 total for all years of training.
    • I want to save $3,000 for my rainy day fund each year, and $2,500 for retirement each year.  If I save $2,500 for retirement each year, by the time I am 65 years old I will have $83,200 plus interest.
    • Comparing my future income and expenses makes me think that college is going to be very expensive, however, I feel like I am saving a lot but not paying off my tuition fast enough. I felt like I found accurate amounts for everything, but I still had a lot left over. I couldn’t find that much on retirement plans, except www.forbes.com said you should have as much saved up in the retirement plan equal to the amount of money you are making at 30. I am a little lower than that. I left a couple thousand to spending and luxuries. I pretended I lived in Louisiana and work at Louisiana State University and that I take the bus, because I want to save and pay back my student loans.

    Week 3 Option 1

If I am to attend college, the most probable major I am to choose is an engineering major. To be more specific, probably a mechanical engineering major. Possible jobs for this major could be an engineering manager, a manufacturing engineer, or a mechanical engineer.

     Engineering Manager
-The average pay for an engineering manger is $118,000 per year.
    - From the aspect of geographic pay differential, an engineering manager makes more money the lager their market is. For example an engineering manager in Phoenix, AZ makes an average of $106,258 while someone with the same position in New York, NY makes and average of $140,088 annually.
-The position requires a bachelors degree in engineering, but some companies require a graduate degree.

    Manufacturing Engineer
-The average annual pay is around $72,000
-The minimum required education for this profession is a bachelors degree in engineering, but many go on to obtain masters in Engineering.

    Mechanical Engineer
-The average annual pay is around $80,000
-The minimum education required is a bachelor in engineering but it is recommended that one have a masters degree as well.

    HW #3 Option #3

    Option #3
I still have no idea if I am going to college reason being is that I still don't the major that I want to take and financial reason as well I don't think I will be able to afford college expenses. I would like to stay in the San Rafael area because all my family members live in San Rafael as well as all my friends. I would like to be a part of more interships programs in order to be able to make my career decision. I don't think I will need to move to another country in order to find out the career I want to pursue. I would probably need to do some service to help me out on what to do.

    Week #3

Yes I want to go to college. Ive realized that there isn't any specific major I have to take to become a doctor in college. But I would like to major in some type of science. Most likely a chemistry major. Some jobs in this field are forensic scientist, pharmacist, and a chemist. The average pay after taxes for a forensic scientist is $55,040, for a pharmacist this is $71,058/year, and for a chemist this is varies but average is 81,300. The salaries as far as I've searched do not vary according to geographic locations. The education requirement for a pharmacist is a four-year pharmacy program for college students and two years of undergraduate coursework and a passing score on the PCAT. The education requirement for a chemist is getting Associate's Degree and a bachelors degree. The personality traits required for these jobs other than the obvious needed for any job are you have to h=be very careful and pay close attention to every detail.

    Week Three: Archaeology

I do want to go to college after high school. That is the plan. I am thinking of majoring in Ethnic Studies or Anthropology depending on the school and which majors it offers.

    Archaeological Field Technician:
    1. Entry-level position that require only a bachelor's degree. These translate out to an average yearly starting pay of $28,350 with a possible low of $15,080.
    2. The only states I could find for archaeological field technician hourly wages were Alaska, California and Hawaii. Alaska: 16-22$ for a field tech; California: 12.10-17.25$; Hawaii: 14$ field crew.
    3. The College Board reports that the average cost of one year of in-state tuition and fees at a public four-year school is $8,655. Tack on another $9,205 in room and board costs and I'm looking at an average yearly bill of $17,860. For private school students, the situation is even more pricey. B.A. or B.S. in Anthropology, Archaeology; University-based archaeological field school.
    4. People who are strong, not addicted to drugs and have a valid drivers license.
Knowledge and understanding of equipment and technology used to perform recording of archaeological field data. Knowledge of basic field excavation techniques; knowledge of basic archaeological laboratory techniques. Extensive manual labor including excavation with shovels, bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing 50 lbs. Must have tolerance for working in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrains in a wide range of weather conditions. So being very physically fit is a requirement.

    Prehistoric Archaeologist Professor:
    1. 2009 Salary = $52,484 + $2,941 (Years of Experience) + $16,880(PhD) + $11,108 (Manager). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the average salary of a University Professor was $58,830 annually as of May 2008. The lowest-paid 10 percent of all University Professors earn less than $28,870, while the highest-paid 10 percent are paid more than $121,850 per year. The middle 50 percent of all University Professors earn between $41,600 and $83,960.
The American Association of University Professors reports that the salary of full-time faculty at private colleges and universities average $92,257, as compared to $77,009 for those teaching at public colleges and universities.
    2. Bachelor of Arts make:
    • New York: $40,341-$129,300
    • Chicago: $41,150-$128,033
    • Washington, D.C.: $40,078-$114,929
    • Los Angeles: $39,887-$130,079
    • San Francisco: $44,050-$125,320
    Bachelor of Science make:
    • New York: $40,881-$147,469
    • Houston: $36,779-$104,351
    • Chicago: $41,150-$104,709
    • San Francisco: $49,023-$144,608
    • Washington, D.C.: $39,992-$95,576
    3. I could also be a teacher in Prehistoric Archaeology if I got a B.A. or B.S. in archaeology and then got a PhD in prehistoric archaeology.
    4. People who enjoy lecturing and teaching college students and are passionate about the material they teach. People who are organized and like to beat to their own drum.

    Contract Archaeologist:
    1. Entry-level position that require only a bachelor's degree. These translate out to an average yearly starting pay of $28,350 with a possible low of $15,080.
    2. States with the highest employment level in this occupation:

    3. Entry-level positions requiring only an undergraduate degree.

    4. good knowledge of subjects like geology, geography, chemistry and history is expected. A 4-year bachelor's degree in Anthropology is recommended. Most of the jobs in the archaeological field require people with a master's degree. Either MA or M

    After high school

I have figured out that I want to study Biology as my major in college.

After doing some research, here's what I found for the jobs that are common to people who have had this major:

    Biological Technician
    • This job requires knowledge in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English.
    • It requires a four-year bachelor's degree.
    • For people who have these jobs they are most likely be realistic, investigative, and conventional.
    • For some reason, the west coast tends to have more jobs available and higher average pay for biological technicians than the east coast does.
    • Average hourly wage: $20.33 per hour (May 2011, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)
equivalent of an annual income of $42,290 for full-time work 40 hrs per week
    • California: 10,920 jobs for biological technicians, average pay of $45,080 per year
    • New York: 3,990 jobs for biological technicians, average pay of $45,080 per year
    Medical Scientist
    • Most of the occupations require graduate school Ex. master's degree/Ph.D., M.D., or J.D.
    • Earnings: annual median salary of $76,130 or median hourly wages of $36.60
    • They're likely to be investigative, realistic, artistic, and social
    • States that are among the top paying for medical scientists:
      • Maine: $115,470
      • New Jersey: $115,390

    ~Week 3 ~ After High School~

    Week 3
    After High School...

Although I am doing a child education internship this summer, I actually would like to go into the medical field after I graduate. After high school, I am planning on going to a 4-year university, then med. school, and finally, a residency for the career that I end up choosing. I would like to major in Biology, which is a must for one of my career considerations. I am hoping to either study to become a radiologist, cardiologist, or pediatrician. All of these careers require 11-12 years of school.
    Annual Salary-
           Radiologist- $300,000+
           Cardiologist- $400,000+
           Pediatrician- $150,000+
Location plays a large role in the determination of the salary for these careers. Working in a more rural country brings a lower salary as opposed to working the same job in a busy urban/city area, which will pay much more.

The personalities for people in these fields are similar to each other. Pediatricians are usually friendly and affable, since they are working with children. Radiologists and Cardiologists are attentive and receptive since the work they're doing requires great attention to detail. However, for all three of these careers, it is necessary to be intelligent and caring.

    Week 3. After High School

Something i definitely want to do after High School is College. Infact i want to start at College of Marin wile still in High School. i want to transfer to a independent studies high school so i can get a part time job and take class at COM. After 2 years at COM i plan on transferring to a University like Sonoma State.

    Week 2. Work Readiness skills

One Work readiness skill that i have used in my work space is dedication. I showed up on time and ready to work. I also used  teamwork in my internship. There are a few other people doing the same internship so we came together to help each other work on a project.
A skill i need to work on is my enthusiasm . I can be tired, and not full of energy sometimes when i haven't eaten or am having a bad day. I need to learn to leave certain life things at the door before i start to work.

    Goals, Allies, Habits. Weeks 1

Goals For My Internship-  My first goal is just to complete my internship. Something i would like to gain from my internship are work skills like how to communicate well with others, how to be respectful in the work place, and a reference for my resume in the future.

Allies- Some Allies i have are people like my Princable ms. Allen and my english teacher Mrs. Rosen. These people are allies because they can give me connections to certain things.

Habbits- I have good and bad Habits. Some good habits i have are showing up on time, I'm very respectful, and i am presentable.

    Work Readiness Skills

This week two work readiness skills I used were dedication and diligence. I started and finished 1 of my summer assignments for AP biology, I dedicated much of my free time this week to ready the chapters assigned, I used diligence by answering the questions given with accuracy. I haven't started my internship so i do not have a weakness that has come about yet.

    Work Readiness Skills

    Work Readiness Skills

    - One work readiness skill that I possessed during my internship that supported success was my dedication to the task. I showed up willing to work and happy to follow the instruction that I was given. This dedication was shown in the form of my positive attitude and can do mind set when given tasks at my internship. This resulted in a positive relationship with my fellow employers and the kids at the camp.

    - Another work readiness skill that I showed was professionalism. This was shown in my ability to show up on time, or even earlier, ready to work. I wore the appropriate attire that is required for an active YMCA camp and I practiced good hygiene. Overall this also increased my relationship with my co-workers and campers.

    - My weakness is my ability to communicate with my coworkers. I feel that I haven't actually have too much trouble with this skill during my internship. It may hold me back in certain respects, for example whenever we have guest counselors come in I'm not sure whether or not I am supposed to help them out or not. I always do help, but I haven't communicated properly to find out what the actual situation is.

    Positive way

    • Dedicated: I was very dedicated at my internship because I always arrived on time with a good attitude & offered if they needed anything for me to do. I learned that I am a very helpful and have ambition.
    •  Tolerant/ Respectful: I have been tolerant & respectful at my internship because I respect the lady's I work with and listen to what they tell me. What I learned is I suggest good ideas when we are setting up & cleaning up.
    • Weakness (Acts with diligence): Ex. I sometimes don't like asking a lot of questions because I feel like I might get annoying.

Week 2 - Development and Goals at The Y

    2 Positive Work Readiness Skills

    1) I was very dedicated.  I came as many days as I could, of course I had to leave early to go to my Monday classes at MCOE or for work on Fridays, but other than that I went everyday from 9-4 or sometimes earlier.  I followed the rules very well too, since I'm working with kids, it's important to give them side hugs only because it can give people the wrong idea.  At times it would get hard to cause the kids would be running towards you at full speed with a full on frontal hug, but I would just give them a one-armed hug. I learned that working with kids can be rewarding, but tricky at the same time too.

    2) I was very professional.  The dress code is pretty simple, the interns have to wear this bright neon orange shirt every time we show up.  We can wear shorts, but of course, they can't be too short.  Open toed-shoes aren't allowed because there's a lot of running and walking involved, so I just wear athletic shoes.  I would come to my intern clean everyday with little to no makeup, but a lot of sunscreen and my hair tied up and out of my face.  I would always show up early, between 15-30 minutes early.  It's nice to show up early cause there are kids who get dropped off early so I can just play with them like I normally would.  There's also a sign-in sheet that all interns are required to fill out so I fill that out right when I get in and fill out my own as well, then I do the same thing after the end of my day.  Lastly, if there's any day I can't show up or if I have to leave early, I always let my supervisor know.  I learned that being professional for a job like this is very key because it would set a good examples for kids who may look up to me and my supervisor can trust me more since I'm keeping her up-to-date.

    1 Area of Growth

    1) So far I've been pretty good with all of my readiness skills, I haven't noticed any that I needed to work on.

Work Readiness Skills used at my Internship

    Week 2- Work Readiness Skills

Examples of work readiness skills during my internship:

I was tolerant and respectful- From the first day of my internship, I have been exceptionally respectful and tolerant toward everyone that I have had to work with at any time. I have especially been patient with the kids that I have been working with these past days. I have found that with being patient, I am able to have the children listen to me more, and have them follow directions prominently. It also allows me to be receptive to things that need to be done or what I can do better. This has led to more productive and useful time during my internship.

I was professional- So far, for everyday of my internship, I have arrived not only on time, but about 10 minutes or so earlier. I have also been dressed professionally, in clothes that are comfortable, however, at the same time are appropriate and pertinent to my internship.

Work readiness skills to improve during my internship:

Can communicate effectively- I think that I wasn't communicating as much as I could have with the instructors present at my internship. I believe that although I did communicate and interact with them, I can improve by talking to them even more and letting them be aware of other things that could hellp all us improve at what we do.

    Lydia's Goals, Habits, and Allies

    Goals:

My current goal is to put my work before my social life and stop procrastinating. Usually, after school or work, i will go straight to hang out with my friends, and when I get home really late, I will stay up all night doing my homework. I want to learn to put my work first, so instead of going to see my friends first, I would do my work first.
My future goal is to get straight A's throughout high school, so that I can attend Stanford Law.

    Habits:

Some good habits that I have is that I always complete my work, even if I have to stay up all night doing it. A habit I hope to obtain is managing my time better, and learn to ignore my friends when they ask me to hang out if I haven't finished my work yet.

    Allies:
Currently my allies are my friends and my brother-in-law. I only make friends with people who also get straight A's, so we work together to make sure everyone in our group has our work done. Some future allies I would like to have are teachers I may have, so that they can help me reach my potential goals.

    Goals, Habits, Allies

Week 2 Blog Post: PaperSeed Goals

    2 Positive Work Readiness Skills

    1. I was professional. I showed up 15 minutes early (avoiding absenteeism). I had taken a shower and my hair was brushed and clipped back. I wore a satin blouse with a blazer and comfortable, professional shoes. I was clean and did not wear excessive amount of make-up. Only chap-stick and mascara. This was good because all the other women and men were dressed casually, but on the nicer, more put-together side of casual. Except the IT guy, he was sagging ripped jeans and had a huge beard, but a shaved head. It was an interesting look. I learned that looking nice builds confidence and made me feel like I fit in better with the work crowd.

    2. I was dedicated. On Tuesday, I spent over three hours researching what it means to be a social media and marketing intern and what goals I have for my 6 week internship. I typed out a work plan and even though only two goals were required, I wrote out 8 just in case any goals were not acceptable or doable. I was also very literate, typing up and sending everything to Aliyya Shelley Mattos. She complimented my work and thanked me for creating clear and accessible goals. I am happy to say that I will be able to start actually completing the goals of a Social Media and Marketing Intern for PaperSeed Foundation this Thursday. I learned to continue to work hard on a project and to recheck everything you do because dedicated hard work pays off.

    1 Area of Growth

    1. I was not diligent. I forget to get my internship agreement signed. I even remembered to bring it to the CellMark Office. I am very forgetful and wish I was more organized and had remembered to get her to sign the paper. This is holding me back because I was supposed to turn the Internship agreement in on June 16th to my Liason. I will get it done this Thursday though, and I have written it down everywhere, so hopefully I will remember. I learned to focus and try not to be an air head.
