Week Three: Archaeology

I do want to go to college after high school. That is the plan. I am thinking of majoring in Ethnic Studies or Anthropology depending on the school and which majors it offers.

Archaeological Field Technician:

1. Entry-level position that require only a bachelor's degree. These translate out to an average yearly starting pay of $28,350 with a possible low of $15,080.

2. The only states I could find for archaeological field technician hourly wages were Alaska, California and Hawaii. Alaska: 16-22$ for a field tech; California: 12.10-17.25$; Hawaii: 14$ field crew.

3. The College Board reports that the average cost of one year of in-state tuition and fees at a public four-year school is $8,655. Tack on another $9,205 in room and board costs and I'm looking at an average yearly bill of $17,860. For private school students, the situation is even more pricey. B.A. or B.S. in Anthropology, Archaeology; University-based archaeological field school.

4. People who are strong, not addicted to drugs and have a valid drivers license.

Knowledge and understanding of equipment and technology used to perform recording of archaeological field data. Knowledge of basic field excavation techniques; knowledge of basic archaeological laboratory techniques. Extensive manual labor including excavation with shovels, bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing 50 lbs. Must have tolerance for working in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrains in a wide range of weather conditions. So being very physically fit is a requirement.

Prehistoric Archaeologist Professor:

1. 2009 Salary = $52,484 + $2,941 (Years of Experience) + $16,880(PhD) + $11,108 (Manager). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the average salary of a University Professor was $58,830 annually as of May 2008. The lowest-paid 10 percent of all University Professors earn less than $28,870, while the highest-paid 10 percent are paid more than $121,850 per year. The middle 50 percent of all University Professors earn between $41,600 and $83,960.

The American Association of University Professors reports that the salary of full-time faculty at private colleges and universities average $92,257, as compared to $77,009 for those teaching at public colleges and universities.

3. I could also be a teacher in Prehistoric Archaeology if I got a B.A. or B.S. in archaeology and then got a PhD in prehistoric archaeology.

4. People who enjoy lecturing and teaching college students and are passionate about the material they teach. People who are organized and like to beat to their own drum.

Contract Archaeologist:
